먼저 How about ~?와 What about ~?는 둘 다 뭔가 제안할 때에는 똑같은 의미를 전합니다. 예를 들어 "오늘 저녁 같이 먹을까?"를 How about dinner tonight?해도 좋고 What about dinner?해도 맞습니다.
이젠 차이점을 설명 드릴까요?
본문 대화에서는 앞서 How's your lovely wife?가 나온 다음에 되받어서 "자네 아내는?"하고 나오잖아요? 이럴 때에는 How about yours?가 맞습니다. What about yours?라고는 하지 않아요. 이미 앞서 질문한 내용과 동일한 내용이 적용되면서 대상만 바뀔 경우에는 How about ~? 구문을 사용하게 되는 것이지요. 반면에, 대화중에 특정한 인물이나 일을 소홀히 하는 듯한 인상을 받아서 "존은 어떻게 할까? 걔도 오라고 하는 거야?" 처럼 말하는 상황이 있을 수 있습니다. 그럴 때에는 What about John? Are we inviting him too? 정도로 말하게 됩니다. 이 때에는 How about John?이라고 하지 않아요.
순간 이해가 된 듯해도 시간이 지나면 또 혼동되는 것이 바로 이 How about와 What about의 차이입니다. 그래도 걱정하지 마세요. 혼동되면 그때마다 다시 확인하면 되죠 뭐.
