mess up은 ‘엉망으로 만들다, 망치다’라는 뜻이다. 방을 어지르거나(mess up the room), 머리 모양이 망가지는(my hair’s messed up) 것 외에도, 계획이나 일정이 생각대로 풀리지 않아 엉망이 되었다고(the plans were messed up) 할 때도 mess up을 쓴다.

"I screwed up the examination"은 "시험을 망쳐 버렸어요"라는 표현입니다. Screw는 '나사, 나사를 돌리다'라는 뜻으로 많이 사용되지만 '망치다, 특히 멍청한 행동으로 일을 그르치다' 등의 표현으로도 사용됩니다. 같은 표현으로는 spoil, ruin, cause to fail 등이 있습니다. "I ruined the examination" 또한 "나는 시험을 망쳤다"라는 표현입니다.
