History of Palm OS
Overview of PDA's equipped with Palm OS from the beginnings to today.
1996 (Quarter 2): Palm Pilot 1000
The first handheld with Palm OS was presented by the manufacturer US Robotics in the beginning of 1996. The department "Palm Computing" was transferred to 3Com in June 1997 and became independent in March 2000. In Germany this model was not available.
1996 (Quarter 2): Palm Pilot 5000
In contrast to the Pilot 1000 this model had 512 KB RAM. The manufacturer was US Robotics with its Palm Computing division.
1997 (Quarter 1): Palm Pilot Personal
Beside the new operating system Palm OS 2 the Pilot Personal also features a backlight.
1997 (Quarter 1): Palm Pilot Professional
In comparison to the Pilot Personal the Pilot Professional comes with TCP/IP support, mailfunktion and more memory (1 MB RAM).
1997 (Quarter 3): IBM Workpad (10u)
IBM starts selling palms under its own label. This model is a clone of the Palm Pilot Professional. The only differences compared to the models of Palm Computing are case color and labeling.
1997 (Quarter 3?): IBM Workpad (20X)
A clone of the Palm Pilot Professional with 2 MB RAM.
1998 (Quarter 1): Palm III
In 1997 Palm (US-Robotics) was aquired by 3Com and developed a new model series. As substantial new features in the Palm III there are infrared, the new operating system Palm OS 3 and FlashROM for future OS updates.
1998 (Quarter 1): Symbol SPT 1500
Symbol developed a palm with an integrated bar code scanner. Besides the device corresponds to the Palm III.
1998 (Quarter 3?): IBM Workpad 2 (22X)
A clone of the Palm III.
1999 (Quarter 1): Palm IIIx
In comparison to the Palm III it comes with more memory (4 MB).

Small, light and elegant Palm. For the first time with lithium-ion rechargeable battery.

After the Tungsten T Palm introduces another OS 5 PDA. The Zire 71 does not have integrated Bluetooth, but it features an integrated digital camera.
2003 (Quarter 2): Palm Tungsten C
The third Palm OS 5 Handheld from Palm. The Tungsten C contains integrated Wi-Fi, large memory (51 MB user accessible), 400 MHz processor as well as a mini keyboard.
2003 (Quarter 2): Sony Clié NX73V
Again another folding Sony. The camera only has 310.000 Pixel and no flash. In contrast to the us-version the european version has integrated bluetooth.

Compared to the NX73V this model has a better camera and more memory.

The well-known manufacturer for navigation systems brings a palm os 5 pda with gps support and other nice features.
2003 (Quarter 3): GSL Xplore G18
The first smartphone from "Group Sens Ltd" in Hong Kong. In contrast to the Onys no foldable design, no digit keys.
2003 (Quarter 3): Handspring Treo 600
The last device from Handspring. The company became a part of palmOne in October 2003. Handspring brings a comparatively small smartphone, that also supports SD/MMC expansion cards.
2003 (Quarter 3): Palm Tungsten T2
The Tungsten T2 corresponds as far as possible to the Tungsten T. However it has an improved display and twice as much memory.
2003 (Quarter 3): Palm Treo 600
The last device from Handspring. The company became a part of palmOne in October 2003. Handspring brings a comparatively small smartphone, that also supports SD/MMC expansion cards.
2003 (Quarter 3): Samsung SPH-i500
This Smartphone isn't usable in Germany/Europe because of CDMA and therefore also not available.
2003 (Quarter 3): Sony Clié UX40
Sony introduced a new model in psion format. In contrast to the ux50 the ux40 lacks integrated wi-fi. Both models feature a 29 MB internal storage card.

2003 (Quarter 4): Hunetec H500
The korean company Hunetec builds a Palm OS Handheld, which is to be sold over Weblink Wireless. The PDA uses the ReFLex-network, that can be used exclusively for data communication (TCP/IP). The network is only accessible in different parts of America. According to a report the handheld could also enter the market with color and 16 MB RAM.
2003 (Quarter 4): Legend P300
This from the chinese Legend Group (Lenovo) manufactured PDA is a competition for the Palm Tungsten E or the Sony TJ25. It is exclusively sold in China.
2003 (Quarter 4): Legend P100
Another Palm from Legend Group (Lenovo). This one is the low-cost variant of the P300 with only 8 MB RAM and grayscale display.
2003 (Quarter 4): Palm Zire 21
PalmOne supplements its entrance model Zire with OS 5 and 8 MB memory. The handheld was presented on October 1 as well as the Tungsten T3 and the Tungsten E.
2003 (Quarter 4): Palm Tungsten E
A comparatively favorable color PDA from PalmOne. The Tungsten E was officially introduced on 1 October.
2003 (Quarter 4): Palm Tungsten T3
The Tungsten T2 was still not officially announced, there already emerged rumors about the Tungsten T3. This palm is above all characterised by a larger display (highres+) and virtual graffiti (for the first time with Palm). Additionally it is possible to use the landscape mode next to the well known portrait mode. The Tungsten T3 was officially introduced on October 1 in 2003.
2003 (Quarter 4): Sony Clié TJ25
The successor of the SJ22 comes with Palm OS 5.2. In contrast to the TJ35 it isn't able to play mp3-files and it is equipped with less memory.

2004 (Quarter 1): Samsung SGH-i500
Samsung announced its first Smartphone with Palm OS 5 and SD/MMC expansion cards. The introduction to the market was planned original in the USA for quarter 3 in 2003. According to Samsung it will be available in 2004 later.

With the TH55 Sony introduced a handheld with a large display, without folding mechanism and without keyboard. Besides this it is equipped with a digital camera, WLAN and Bluetooth. Bluetooth is not available in the US-Version. The Handheld was officially presented by Sony on 2004/02/03.
2004 (Quarter 2): GSL Xplore G88
An update of the Xplore G18. The G88 has a slidable keypad.
2004 (Quarter 2): Palm Zire 31
In contrast to its predecessors (Zire and Zire 21) the Zire 31 contains an SD/MMC expansion slot, more memory and a colored display with 160 by 160 pixels. The Zire 31 was indroduced in 2004/04/28.
2004 (Quarter 2): Palm Zire 72
After the Tungsten T Palm introduces another OS 5 PDA. The Zire 71 does not have integrated Bluetooth, but it features an integrated digital camera.
2004 (Quarter 3): Garmin iQue 3200
Another PDA from Garmin. In contrast to the big brother (iQue 3600) the 3200 has a smaller display (320x320 pixels) and it is missing other features like MP3 or a headphone jack. But this smaller version is a little bit cheaper to buy.
2004 (Quarter 3): Sony Clié VZ90
This Clie is only available in Japan. Sony has withdrawn its presence from the pda market in Europe and the USA. The VZ90 is the first Palm OS handheld that features an OLED display. Introduction was 2004/09/25.
2004 (Quarter 4): GSL Xplore M28
Another smartphone from Group Sense. This update comes with Palm OS 5 and integrated SD/MMC-slot.
2004 (Quarter 4): Palm Tungsten T5
The successor of the Tungsten T3 was indroduced on Oktober 4 in 2004. The Tungsten T5 features flash-RAM and the handheld can be used as an USB removable device (drive mode).
2004 (Quarter 4): Palm Treo 650
The Treo 650 features some innovations compared to the Treo 600. It has a highres display, integrated bluetooth, non-volatile memory and a removable battery. The smarphone was introduced on October 25 in 2004.
2004 (unknown): Samsung SGH-i505
Although the already announced Samsung SGH-i500 is not on the market yet, Samsung was showing another Palm OS 5 Smartphone (SGH-i505) at the ITU World Telecom Conference. Similar to the Sonys of the NX series it features a rotating display. It also should contain a digital camera.
2004 (unknown): Samsung SGH-i530
Although the already announced Samsung SGH-i500 is not on the market yet, Samsung was showing another Palm OS 5 Smartphone (SGH-i505) at the ITU World Telecom Conference. Similar to the Sonys of the NX series it features a rotating display. It also should contain a digital camera.
2004 (unknown): Samsung SPH-i550
The SPH-i550 has get approval from the FCC in April 2004. It is an Palm OS 5 Smartphone for the CDMA-Net with a high resolution screen, SD slot and a megapixel camera.
2005 (Quarter 1): Fossil Wrist PDA

Garmin introduced a new Palm with GPS and aviation functions.

Qool Labs introduced its first smartphone with Palm OS 5 (Garnet) at the end of september 2004. The device is based on a smartphone platform developed by PiTech. It should have been available in november 2004. It is available in germany since the end of january 2005.

The korean company Hunetec builds a Palm OS Handheld, which is to be sold over Weblink Wireless. The PDA uses the ReFLex-network, that can be used exclusively for data communication (TCP/IP). The network is only accessible in different parts of America. According to a report the handheld could also enter the market with color and 16 MB RAM.
2003 (Quarter 4): Legend P300
This from the chinese Legend Group (Lenovo) manufactured PDA is a competition for the Palm Tungsten E or the Sony TJ25. It is exclusively sold in China.
